Guna's Concept

In the philosophical system, Guna means for the three  qualities that constitutes the  material Nature.
Indian philosophy, through the Guna theory explains all aspects of reality  psychological , esoteric and phenomenological. The Gunas are in fact infinite number, as well as states of consciousness, although for convenience are divided into three functional categories:

  • Sattva: brightness, knowledge, wisdom, health, sunshine, virtue, peace, calm, happiness and life.
  • Rajas: Passion, activity, excitement, desire, egoism, attachment, oscillation, instability, pain.
  • Tamas: Ignorance, darkness, sloth, laziness, inertia, immobility, delusion, apathy, indifference, death.

The three Gunas can be found identical in every aspect of existence: the nature and life as well as in all states of consciousness. Thus, Sattva prevails when human consciousness is characterized by a state of serenity and mental clarity, when Rajas is predominant, the consciousness becomes active, dynamic, strong-willed and energetic, when in fact prevails Tamas consciousness is inert, plunged into apathy and numbness. The latter fact corresponds to the earth element and represents the inertia, condensation, the trend towards low
Despite Guna have very different characteristics between them (if not opposite) all three "bind", his soul to the world:

  • sattvic trends, generating attachment to happiness;
  • Rajasic trends, generating action and attachment to the fruits resulting therefrom;
  • Tamasic trends, inducing a state of laziness and indolence.

The Gunas are therefore primarily responsible for the cycle of birth and death and transmigration of souls from one body to another (Samsara). Man is imprisoned by these three influences, and he is therefore in a state of duality and suffering, as his soul is spiritual and not material. Only when man becomes capable of exerting the influence of fairness compared to the three Gunas, may be released resulting in Moksha (liberation).
